3D Holographic Projection Services

As holography – the study of holograms & holographic projection – improves, the number of companies offering 3D holographic services increases almost weekly.

What are the potential uses of 3D holographic technology? Holograms are being used in advertising, buisness presentations, entertainment, even now in telepresence video conferencing.

Holographic technology has now reached the point where life-size holograms can be projected at a reasonable cost.  The creation of 360 degree holograms is also being offered by an increasing number of holographic projection services.

Watch the video below for insight into one example of a type of 3D holographic projection :

Manchester Airport Introduce Holographic Security Staff

Two airports in the UK have responded to shrinking staff numbers by introducing holographic doubles of existing staff members to man security lines.  The life-size holograms explain security guidelines while passengers wait in queue.  The 3d holographic projections are so real that passengers regularly mistake them for actual staff, and are often seen handing their passports to the holograms.  The virtual staff members were created by leading holographic projection experts ‘Musion’.  Luton airport, also in the UK, is trialing similar holostaff.

IBM Predicts Mobile Phone 3D Holographic Projection

IBM astounded many recently when predicting that even mobile phones will be able to project 3D holographic images – in as little as 5 years!

But how realistic is this prediction?  Apparently, the prediction is based upon research that IBM are themselves perfoming, together with the results of a survey in to the most life changing near term technologies in the opinion of thousands of scientists and experts.  Recently, we’ve had predictions from both America and Japan that such realistic 3D holographic projections will be available in the home within the next decade.  However, it’s questionable that such complex and expensive technology will be sufficiently minaturised to become part of devices as small as mobile phones in such a short space of time.  Let’s just hope that IBM know something that we don’t!

Father Christmas Appears in London as 3D Hologram

The latest 3D Holographic Projection technology was used to beam Santa Clause live from Lapland to a store in London’s busy Tottenham Court Road.

Will Chang, the store manager, said :

We are delighted that Father Christmas has decided to make time in his busy schedule to meet and greet the children of London. We are also very excited to be the first retailer to embrace cutting-edge 3D holographic technology to enable us to bring the world famous Father Christmas live from Lapland to our store.

Holographic Projection in 40 Years Time

A Guardian writer looks forward 40 years into the future and the everyday (virtual) reality of 3D Holographic Projection in the home :

Daisy decides to start the evening in a bar downtown. The bar in King’s Cross really exists but Daisy and her friends don’t feel like travelling, so with a few clicks her bedroom becomes the (virtual) pub and her friends join her. It’s all done with 3D holographic imaging – once a gimmick but now hugely advanced from the early technology of 2010. An entire wall of Daisy’s bedroom is a vast holographic screen.

“It’s ‘Beam me up, Scotty’,” says Dr Frank Shaw, of the University of Kent’s centre for future studies. “By 2050, you’ll be able to invite your aunt from Australia for Sunday lunch.” And while she might seem as if she is in the same room, eating the roast, she won’t have actually left her own sitting room.

Which is exactly what her parents are doing this evening while Daisy is upstairs with her friends. Although it’s nice to catch up with Katy’s sister in Australia over lunch, real-time social networking means that everyone is pretty much up to speed about what they have all been doing. So, they actually have time for a more civilised conversation about the art exhibition they all attended in cyberspace.

Hatsune Miku – Holographic Singer

Hatsune Miku is a teenage singer famous across Japan…and now making her cute self popular around the world. Her concerts attract thousands of ecstatic devotees.

But Hatsune doesn’t really exist.

Or she does. But only as a 3D Holographic Projection.

Although the concept isn’t unique – virtual band Gorillaz play regularly as holographic projections in the UK - the popularity of Hatsune reveals the true potential of holographic music. For example, because she is a purely digital hologram generated singer, her music and concert performances can be user generated. Fans can submit their own lyrics, tunes, and dance moves, and Hatsune will play your own creations live and in 3D. Just think of the possibilities when this technology hits the home!

Breakthrough Means Live Holographic Projection within Decade

Researchers at an American University have revealed a significant breakthough in holographic projection technology. The team from the University of Arizona have created a 3D holographic display with a refresh rate of only 2 seconds – many times faster than anything previously achieved and 100 times faster than the same technology was capable of only two years ago.

The technology will likely be used in entertainment, business, advertising, and in telemedicine and manufacturing.

Nasser Peyghambarian, head of the reseach team, urged patience with regards to the inevitable excitement at the prospect of 3D holograms in the home, pointing out that much further research will be needed before the technology sees commercial applications. Nethertheless, Peyghambarian claims that that could only be 4 – 7 years away.

Chris Evan’s Raves at Musion’s 3D Holographic Ballerina

Chris Evans, the popular British celebrity DJ, made several tweets recently enthusing over his experience of viewing a holographic ballerina. ‘Amazing’, ‘the future of entertainment’, ‘it was just like she was right in front of me’, were a few of the descriptions he gave at witnessing a 3D holographic projection of a dancing ballerina.
